Gerard Pique has warned Real Madrid there are no clear favourites ahead of the first El Clásico of the season and that Barcelona are ‘recovering’ from a stuttering start to the campaign.

Spanish football’s big two, which were both involved in the botched European Super League launch in April, meet on Sunday at the Nou Camp, with Barcelona trailing second-placed Real by two points.

‘In a Clásico, you come in as equals, there are no favourites,’ Pique said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

‘El Clásico is totally separate from the dynamics.’

The Catalans endured a tumultuous summer, with President Joan Laporta revealing the club had lost €487 million last season and was €1.17 billion in the red and were forced to part ways with Lionel Messi.

The Argentine’s departure set the tone for a dismal start to the season, which saw Barcelona lose 3-0 to both Bayern Munich and Benfica in the Champions League and 2-0 to defending champions Atletico Madrid in the league.

Conversely, while they suffered a shock defeat at home to Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League, Real have won five of their first seven LaLiga matches before losing their unbeaten record to Espanyol last week.

Barcelona haven’t won El Clásico since March 2019 but could leapfrog their rivals with a win on Sunday and Pique believes the five-time European Cup winners are steadily improving.

‘We have had some moments of crisis, but we are recovering,’ he added.

‘We both arrive [into the game] with quite similar dynamics.’

Pique became Barcelona’s oldest goalscorer in the Champions League on Wednesday, heading in the winner as the Catalans beat Dynamo Kiev 1-0 at home to keep their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16 alive.

Following Messi’s departure in the summer, the former Manchester United defender is one of the few members of the Barcelona team that dominated European and Spanish football for the best part of the past decade left at the Nou Camp.

The 34-year-old, however, insisted he had no intention to follow the Argentinian out of the door.

‘It’s certain that with age, when you have lived everything, you look a little for stability,’ he added.

‘I am very happy, with my family and with the team. […] There is little left and I want to enjoy it.’
