Jorginho has claimed he knew Bukayo Saka would miss his decisive fifth penalty in England’s Euro 2020 final shoot-out with Italy as soon as he saw the teenager was taking it.

The Chelsea midfielder had just had his own penalty saved by Jordan Pickford, handing England a chance to salvage their hopes of winning the tournament at Wembley.

But as Jorginho saw the then 19-year-old making the walk to the penalty spot for England, he knew Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was going to save it.

Jorginho said that as he saw Saka walking up, he knew the final was ‘done’ and Italy would win

Speaking to The Telegraph, Jorginho explained: ‘I walked back (after missing his penalty) and it was a long, long walk. I looked and saw it was Saka and Gigio [Donnarumma] and I was pretty sure he was going to save it. I was like “it’s ok, it’s done”‘.

Jorginho admitted that despite his prediction being correct and Italy winning the trophy, he is still getting over missing his own penalty.

‘I still think about the final, especially the penalty,’ he said. ‘People might say it doesn’t matter, but it does for me. It hurts. It still hurts now, even though we won.

‘Whoever says it doesn’t because it doesn’t matter is a liar. I couldn’t believe it, Pickford did very well.

‘I just thought ‘f***, I disappointed my team-mates’ because they trusted me so much in that moment.’

Jorginho won the Champions League with Chelsea this year and is a Ballon d’Or contender

Overall, it is a minor blemish on what has otherwise been a whirlwind year for the midfielder.

The 29-year-old is a contender to win the Ballon d’Or this year after also lifting the Champions League with Chelsea in May, when they beat Manchester City.

He is key part of Thomas Tuchel’s setup at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea currently lead the Premier League table after the first eight matches.

They take on bottom club Norwich next, in Saturday’s early kick-off.
