Manchester United stars David de Gea and Juan Mata stepped out for lunch on Friday as they enjoyed some downtime before their clash against Liverpool.

Both players, who are long-time friends and also international team-mates with Spain, looked in high spirits after leaving the high-end Cibo Restaurant in Hale.

The spot prides itself on its Italian food and is popular with the United squad, with Nemanja Matic having joined De Gea and Bruno Fernandes earlier this season.

And two days on from United’s Champions League victory over Atalanta, De Gea and Mata treated themselves with a trip out – and looked to have enjoyed the occasion.

Playmaker Mata, who has struggled to break into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side this campaign, led the way down the street with the small four-man party in tow.

Dressed casually, both players cracked a smile as Mata appeared to share a joke.

Despite United’s patchy form this term, their dressing room still appears tightly-knit, and Solskjaer will hope it stays that way ahead of a testing run of fixtures.

The win against Atalanta, a game where De Gea pulled off a number of superb saves, slightly lifted the doom and gloom at Old Trafford.

His heroics eased the pressure on Solskjaer, and the United boss is staying grounded ahead of the game against Liverpool, admitting they are not at their rivals’ level.

‘Liverpool are one of the teams we are trying to catch up on, even though last season we were ahead of them maybe because of bad luck with injuries,’ he said.

‘We know we still have to improve to get up to the level of their last four years.

‘It’s going to take everything to get results against the best teams in the world and Europe and Liverpool are one of them.

‘They’re one of the teams we’re chasing. What we’ve done the last four years is what we’re striving towards and go past them.

‘They had a bad spell last year but are now back to their best.’
