- Graeme Souness has hailed Mohamed Salah for being ‘greedy’ and ‘selfish’
- Souness agreed that Liverpool’s Salah is currently the best player in the world

Graeme Souness has dished out his typical brand of compliment by hailing Mohamed Salah as ‘extremely selfish’ but also a ‘goal machine’ that Liverpool must do all they can to tie down to a new contract.
The former Liverpool midfielder accepted Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp’s view that Salah is currently the best player in the world, with the Egyptian in scintillating form having scored seven goals in eight Premier League matches this season.
His goals have been at the heart of Liverpool’s resurgence this season after a shaky last campaign, and Salah will arguably be the biggest threat on the pitch in Sunday’s derby clash against Manchester United.
Graeme Souness has called Liverpool star Mohamed Salah ‘the most selfish player I have seen’
‘I agree with Jurgen Klopp that Mohamed Salah has been the best player in the world this season,’ Souness wrote in his column for The Times.
‘He is perhaps as greedy a player as I have seen. All the top names have an element of that but he is extremely selfish.
‘Personal targets are important to him and he shoots from every possible angle, which frustrates his team-mates at times — especially Mane. The other players accept it because he is so good.’
Far from being his usual critical self, Souness heaped praise on Salah’s attitude, saying that his supposed selfishness actually ends up
Salah is in electric form for Liverpool, scoring seven goals in eight Premier League games
‘When he doesn’t square it, he is either scoring or making goalkeepers work so that the follow-up is a tap-in for someone anyway, which makes it hard for anyone to criticise him.
‘He may even take it as a compliment that I think he is the most selfish player I have seen because he is a goal machine.’
Salah’s Liverpool future has been the subject of intense debates for some time. The star has 20 months left on his Reds contract but has yet to settle on new terms at Anfield.
The 29-year-old recently said in an interview that he would ‘love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can’t say much about that — it’s not in my hands. It depends on what the club want.’
Liverpool fans are waiting to see if Salah will be offered a bumper deal by the club’s owners
It is widely recognised Liverpool will need to make Salah the best-paid player in their history and talks will continue between his agent and the club.
From Souness’ perspective, the Reds should pay Salah what he wants to secure his incredible talent for longer.
‘I won’t speculate on what he is asking for but Liverpool should give it to him,’ he added.
‘It is in their interests to pay him as much as they can afford and also for Salah to stay at the club where he has clearly had the best spell of his career.’
