Islam Makhachev slams Charles Oliveira for ‘not being professional’

Islam Makhachev slams Charles Oliveira for ‘not being professional’ after he was stripped of the lightweight title, as he promises to finish the Brazilian for vacant belt if he accepts showdown

  • Islam Makhachev is pushing hard to have his title opportunity in next fight
  • Charles Oliveira will be competing to win back the title stripped from him
  • Makhachev hit out at the Brazilian for being unprofessional and missing weight
  • Russian said: ‘We don’t have a champion because he don’t make weight’

Islam Makhachev has savaged Charles Oliveira for what he sees as a lack of professionalism leaving the UFC’s lightweight division without a champion.

Oliveira was stripped of his belt for missing weight prior to his emphatic win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 274.

He clocked in at just half-a-pound over after confusion about whether he was on weight or not having hit the mark on practice scales.

Charles Oliveira submitted Justin Gaethje in the first round of their clash at UFC 274

Dangerous Russian Islam Makhachev is the obvious next competitor for Oliveira to face

Makhachev is pushing hard to be given a shot at the belt, but Oliveira has distanced himself from the contest, telling the Russian he needs to face Beneil Dariush first.

Instead, Oliveira has name-checked Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz but Makhachev is critical of the former champion’s approach.

He told ESPN: ‘We don’t have a champion. Charles is a contender. That’s why it’s going to be for the title. I deserve it. I have a 10-fight win streak. [Oliveira] said I don’t deserve this, but he’s asking about Nate Diaz and Conor [McGregor].

‘I think Charles is a No. 1 contender now. We don’t have a champion because he don’t make weight. He is not a professional.’

Some fans are calling for Khabib Nurmagomedov to return and test himself against a legitimate star in Oliveira but Makhachev is confident it would be one-way traffic.

Oliveira wants to take a fight back to Brazil and attempt to win his belt again

He added: ‘This is like an easy fight for Khabib. Khabib have the most dominant grappling from top.

‘He’s going to take him down, hold him there. Very easy. I honestly think this is a very easy fight for Khabib.

‘Stylistically, all of [Oliveira’s] pressure is not going to work against Khabib because Khabib pressures all of his opponents.

‘We don’t have to say Khabib is going to beat Charles — I’m going to beat Charles. And everybody is going to understand.

Oliveira was unprofessional for missing weight in the lead-up to his last win, says Makhachev

‘Honestly, I believe I can finish this guy, and I really want to finish him in the grappling, in his area. I know I can do this.’

Makhachev dispatched Bobby Green earlier this year and has been tipped for the top for some time.

Given Oliveira’s incredible submission skills, it would be a fascinating match-up on the ground if the UFC choose to make the fight before the year is out.
