Heartwarming moment a footy fan’s girlfriend says YES to his marriage proposal at State of Origin – after stadium security killjoys almost shut the whole thing down
- Gold Coast Blues supporters Adam and Sammi got engaged at Origin II in Perth
- It was their anniversary after meeting at Origin II last year and falling in love
- Adam hatched a grand plan including a banner for the crowd to hold up
- He even sweet-talked his way past security who tried to confiscate the banner
A heartwarming State of Origin love story was nearly shut down at the last minute thanks to strict rules at Perth’s Optus stadium – only for love to win out in the end.
Gold Coast lovers Adam and Sammi have become the toast of social media after he proposed to her during the halftime break at State of Origin II on Sunday night.
He even arranged to have fellow Blues supporters hold up a giant banner that read ‘Will You Marry Me?’.
However, the fun police at Optus nearly confiscated the banner before Adam could even get through the turnstiles.
‘It’s been a bit of a plan I’ve been working on for a little while,’ Adam told Perth radio program 6PR Breakfast with Gareth Parker .
‘We met last year at game two Origin so this was our anniversary and I thought what better time to do it?
‘I had to organise it, it was quite interesting when I was coming through I had a little banner made up which [read] ‘Will You Marry Me?’ and apparently you can only have banners that are a certain size.
‘As I was coming through the check-in the police officer said ‘no that is going to be too big’.
‘I had to slowly pull the ring out of my pocket and show him what I was about to do and he let me through.

Once that hurdle had been overcome, Adam just needed a window to organise the crowd around him to be part of the act. Fortunately, nature called for Sammi.
‘When Sam when off to the bathroom I just quickly ran up and down the aisle and let everyone know what was about to happen,’ he said.
‘At halftime I had passed over the little banner up to the people a bit higher than where we were.
‘As the halftime whistle went I got Sam up and got her on the steps and I just went down a few more.
‘I had a few people around me with videos and cameras ready to go. They were all ready for the moment.’
Today Sammi is a little worse for wear and has mostly lost her voice, but told 6PR about how overwhelming the experience was.
‘When I turned around and saw the not-little sign, it was friggin’ huge, behind me and everyone was just standing there, I was in shock,’ she said.
‘I got to tell my sister and then the whole rest of my family blew my phone up from around 10.30pm last night.
The happy couple met at State of Origin II last year and became engaged at State of Origin II in Perth this year. No confirmation on whether the wedding will be at Origin II in 2023
‘Having strangers send me videos and photos online, the people that have recorded it and [taken] photos, it is just awesome. So good.’
So, since the couple met at Origin II in 2021 and got engaged at Origin II in 2022 – surely the wedding will be at Origin II in 2023?
‘You will have to talk to him about that one,’ Sammi laughed.
‘He is the romantic, not me,’
