EXCLUSIVE: Everton switch focus to Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Mohamed Camara after struggling to secure deal for Idrissa Gana Gueye
Everton have switched sights to Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Mohamed Camara after hitting an impasse in talks for Idrissa Gana Gueye.
The Goodison club have been pushing hard to re-sign their former midfielder and had hoped to finalise a deal this week.
However, Sportsmail understands Everton have been unable to find a mutual agreement with Paris St Germain and the 32-year-old so have now switched their attention to Camara.
Everton have switched their focus to attempting to sign Red Bull Salzburg’s Mohamed Camara
The 22-year-old Mali international is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders emerging across Europe having impressed in Salzburg’s Champions League campaign last season. Indeed, he has prompted comparisons with Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante in style.
Camara has drawn enquiries from Leeds United and Newcastle United in recent months but Salzburg have resisted offers.
However, the player is interested in the prospect of joining Everton and linking up with manager Frank Lampard.
Everton have already signed highly-rated Amadou Onana from Lille this week and Camara’s arrival would be viewed as a major coup.
Lampard has been determined to avoid a repeat of last season’s relegation scrap and is eager to have greater energy in his midfield going forward. Camara reads the game well to snuff out danger and is economical in possession.
Everton also signed Wolves defender Conor Coady this week and are working to add a striker before the window closes.
