Manchester United are weighing up a £45million move for Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

The United board have been made aware that the Brazil international is willing to make the move despite only joining Atletico last summer and agreeing a five-year deal.

Atletico need to sell players this summer and had offered Alvaro Morata but 23-year-old Cunha fits the profile United would prefer.

No swap for Cristiano Ronaldo has been discussed at this stage with United maintaining the Portuguese remains part of their plans.

United have been working through transfer targets on Monday as they look to deliver new signings for Erik ten Hag.

United’s other prominent option, Stuttgart’s Sasa Kalajdzic, a 6ft 6ins Austria international, can be bought for around £15m. He is also under consideration at Brighton. Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven remains on their list.

Cunha was an 83rd-minute substitute for Atletico on Monday night as they opened their LaLiga season with a 3-0 win away at Getafe. Fellow forwards Morata (twice) and Antoine Griezmann got the goals.

Talks are also continuing over a contract for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Should they join, Cunha and Rabiot would look to avoid the example set by a string of poor United signings in recent years.

Gary Neville used his Sky Sports Monday Night Football appearance to slam the club’s recruitment since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, claiming United have only made two signings that have been a clear success over the past nine years.

Gary Neville said Manchester United have only made two good signings in the last 10 years

‘One of the problems Manchester United have had for 10 years is that they’ve flip-flopped between managers and strategies. That’s been a massive issue.

‘We did a little exercise where we looked at major signings at the club over the last 10 years, removing players like third goalkeepers. We removed some of the younger players but £1.25bn has been sent.

‘We think there are only two signings, at this moment in time, that have been good value and have performed at a level. Bruno Fernandes has gone off the boil a bit but, because of the numbers he’s hit over two seasons, you have to say he worked – and [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic has worked.’
